Identity Theft – Security Tip #2 – Don’t Trust Caller ID
8/2/2010 @ 9:26:PM By Moynihan_Lyons
Here’s another great tip that Jeff Lanza shared at his identity theft presentation last week.
Don’t believe caller id.
Just because the name or number on a display looks like it from a legitimate source, you could be the victim of a spoofer.
Bad guys can use “spoof cards” to make the caller id readout display any name/number they want.
So, if you get a call from anyone asking for your personal information or offering to let you make an immediate payment on a bill, be very careful.
A better option would be to ask for a number that you can call back to verify.
Or you can choose another method of making a payment – via mail or website. If you choose to make a web payment, look for https: – the “s” indicates that it is secure.
